Albany Convict Gaol and Museum

The Albany Convict Gaol was established in 1852 for imperial convicts that were transported to Albany as skilled labourers. Originally consisting of a cell block for convicts with quarters for the warden, the gaol was extended in 1873 to become a public prison, with Aboriginal prisoners being moved to the prison as a result of increasing numbers of escapes from the Lawley Park town prison.

The gaol was originally established with rehabilitation as a key principle, and convicts sentenced to transportation from England between 1850-1868 often served time in the gaol. Convicts who had optained their ticket to leave were hired by free settlers for labour, and work conducted by the convicts included the town jetty, manning the pilot boat and building the road to Perth.

The gaol was extended once again in 1875 with women’s cells and addiction warden quarters. In the 1930s, it was used as a police lock-up during the Great Depression. By 1941, the gaol was put up for sale by the Public Works Department and condemned as unfit for habitation.

It wasn’t until 1989 when work began to restore the gaol, which were finalised in 1996 at which point it became a museum. The gaol museum reveals stories about the early days of town settlement, the inmates who were kept there and the gaol facilities, as well as an exhibition on one of Albany’s most decorated soldiers.

The Museum also features an extensive collection of photographs from Albany’s history.

What Our Customers Say

Conference venue excellence

When organising a conference in Covid times there was always going to be additional stress, but the team at Dog Rock Motel made it easy and painfree. Nothing was too hard and they paid attention to the details. Venue, whilst a little dated had that cozy regional feeling we were going for and Limes restaurant had everyone raving about the food. Biggest standout though was the staff, Bry, Vanessa and Patrick in particular made it all run like clockwork. Friendly, efficient and actually caring that it was done right - if they could manage all venues I run events at that would be great!

A Little Gem of a Place

We were recommended this hotel from a local girl after we had a very disappointing overnight stay at h Ibis Styles, Albany. This place is fantastic. We had a Heritage Room which is one of the newly refurbished rooms. Small, but simply beautiful. Everything you need, comfortable bed, tea and coffee making facilities, even biscuits! The bathroom, although compact, gorgeously designed and CLEAN. There was even a couch and coffee table in the room as well as a small breakfast bar area and fridge. Perfect. The on site restaurant is a definite must. The food was exquisite and not too badly priced either. Definitely check this hotel out when next booking your stay in Albany.

Comfortable stay

A comfortable stay in a large room. The reception advice on where to go in the area was very helpful. The attached resturant was very good though we only had room service, we missed the trick of eating there!

Short stay in Albany

We stayed in Albany for a couple of days, and stayed at the Dog Rock Motel. Hard to miss with the namesake 'Dog Rock' across the road. Well situated to the centre of Albany, with everything a short walk or drive to get to. Well appointed room, nicely renovated and very comfortable. they have an onsite restaurant Lime 303 which we didn't try, but there are plenty of dining options close by. Would recommend staying the the Dog Rock if you are in Albany.

Comfy rooms and great restaurant

We spent two nights at the motel while in Albany to catch up with friends. Staff were warm and welcoming, and the room was comfortable and recently refurbished. We ate at Lime 303 twice while we were here. Great surroundings and a varied menu. The pork belly was delicious! Highly recommended!
